Our Story

Fourteen years before the start of the civil war in 1847, Luther Moore Sr. built his house on what would become his tobacco farm. His son Luther Moore Jr. helped him build a two story tobacco barn, several smaller outbuildings, and later a large addition on the house. After growing tobacco for several years, the soil would need rest to replenish nutrients.

During those years, the Moore’s grew corn, raised dairy cows, and planted apple trees. The tobacco barn has since come down; but the chimney — with two hearths —  remains and is standing on its own in a field behind the house. Still growing on the property as well are two apple trees that were first planted in the early 1900’s.

The Cidery

Flash forward more than 100 years later, Tommy Evans II purchased and moved into the old farmhouse with his son, Tommy III in 2016.

During the first year, they converted the overgrown farm and horse paddocks into a place suitable for an apple orchard. The next year they planted the first of the modern apple trees. Since then, they have grafted cuttings from the heritage apple trees planted over one hundred years ago onto new rootstock to preserve the cultivar and use the fruit they produce. Dispersed in the orchard are nitrogen fixing trees that add nutrients to the soil and are one of the innovative practices we use to create a sustainable orchard.

In 2019 they were given licenses from the United States and the state of Maryland to produce hard cider.  Since then they have expanded to neighboring properties increasing the size of the orchard and adding a building to be converted to a tasting room.
